Quick-start hookup
The step-by-step guide to safe, efficient recoveries with the Pro-Tote® Series.
The Pro-Tote Lifting Guide is designed to help operators understand the proper setup, lifting points, and safe operating steps for using a fifth wheel wrecker. If you have ever wondered how to tow a semi truck yourself or how to recover a semi truck using your own tractor, this guide provides the starting point for safer, more confident operation.
With the right equipment, training, and setup, Pro-Tote makes self recovery for semi truck operators more practical and efficient.
1.
Align the Rig Back up to the disabled unit, leaving about 3-4 feet of space. Jump out and double-check your alignment before you start your hookup.
2.
Basket the Suspension Install your Grade 70 chains by “basketing” the entire rear suspension of the disabled truck. Run the chains between the brake cam and the axle to secure both rear axles.
3.
Secure the Safety Loops Attach the chains to the inside of the frames. Use any remaining chain length to create your safety loops—never skip the failsafe.
4.
Final Approach Back your tractor to within 1–2 inches of the towed unit. Take up the slack in your tow chains and hook them securely into the Pro-Tote lifting bar.
5.
Lift & Go Engage the electric/hydraulic boom to lift the towed unit. Confirm your clearance, secure your lines, and you’re ready to roll.
Remember:
Always perform a pull-test to ensure a solid lock before hitting the road.
